Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters is an American disaster film serving as a standalone sequel to the blockbuster "Twister" (1996). The film has a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, based on a story by Joseph Kosinski and characters created by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Crichton from the original film. "Twisters" stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a past tornado encounter. Now she studies storms in the safety of New York City. She is lured back to Tornado Alley by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a new tracking system. She crosses paths with the charming but reckless social media storm-chaser, Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) and his thrill-seeking crew. As the storm season intensifies with terrifying, unprecedented phenomena, Kate, Tyler, and their teams find themselves in the paths of converging massive storm systems over Oklahoma in a fight for survival. The film boasts an ensemble cast including Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O'Brian, Nik Dodani, and Paul Scheer. Produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, Twisters has an estimated budget of $200 million and was shot in Oklahoma in 2023. It is a joint production between Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, and The Kennedy/Marshall Company. An interesting fact is that the late Bill Paxton, who starred in Twister, had tried for years to get a sequel made focusing on a single, devastating tornado event, however, the project never materialized before he passed away in 2017. Twisters incorporates the impacts of climate change into its plot, with more violent and widespread tornado activity than the original 1996 film.
